Sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, headache these are all the result of your immune
system reacting to who knows what. It could be pollen, it could be cat dander,
it could even be cockroach poop! In any case, when you’re suffering with
allergies you want relief and if you’re like me you don’t like taking
pharmaceuticals for too long. The good news is there are several non
pharmaceutical solutions to seasonal allergies. When vitamin C levels are high
histamine tends to be low and in case you didn’t know histamine is an
inflammatory chemical released by your immune system in response to invaders. So
having a high amount of vitamin C in your system will reduce your level of
histamine and reduce your allergies. If you’ve been out in nature and you’ve
come into contact with stinging nettle, chances are you won’t forget it because
it gives you a nice little temporary rash. Besides that, stinging nettle is
very nutritious and it also exerts an antihistamine and anti-inflammatory
effect in your body which is wonderful for allergies. For the purpose of
relieving allergy symptoms, the leaf is the component of the plant that is used
and during processing the stinging part is removed so you don’t have to worry
about that. Just as a side note, there’s another medicinal property of
stinging nettle which is the root and that’s a topic for a whole other video
altogether. Many non-pharmaceutical allergy formulas will contain a
proprietary extract from the plant Tinospora cordifolia known as Tinofend®.
This complex of polyphenols and polysaccharides addresses the root cause
of allergies. It’s been shown to increase a certain type of white blood cell
called a macrophage and this is cool because macrophages gobble up the
offending agents that come into your body – the things that cause the allergies –
they gobble them up so that there’s less of them available so that you don’t have
the allergic reaction to the offending agent. This is cool because it prevents
the allergic reaction from the source. Quercetin is a flavonoid found in foods
from plants such as apples, tea, onions, and cruciferous vegetables to name a few.
It’s an antioxidant, an anti-inflammatory, and much like vitamin C, it blocks
histamine. Studies have shown that folks who eat a lot of apples have less
tendency to have asthma and bronchitis. So maybe the old adage is true that an
apple a day really does keep the doctor away. Another natural histamine blocking
substance is good old baking soda. Besides whitening your teeth and
reducing your heartburn and cleaning your counter tops and removing odors from
your refrigerator, bicarbonate salts can help you feel better when you’re
suffering with allergies. Here’s the product I usually use and finding a good
product that contains most of the ingredients I just mentioned isn’t too
difficult nowadays. Just make sure you read the label so you know that you’re
not adding unnecessary ingredients like dyes and other additives to your body.
