I’m Gabe Garza with today’s health news. When
people think of prescription drug overdoses, painkillers likely come to mind. However,
they’re not the only prescription drugs that people are overdosing on. According to
a press release issued by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, a new study found that
more people have overdosed and died than previously known from anti-anxiety drugs known as benzodiazepines,
which include Valium and Xanax. These drugs are used to treat anxiety, panic disorders
and insomnia. The study found the number of Americans filling prescriptions for anti-anxiety
medications increased 67 percent between 1996 and 2013. Lead study author said that anti-anxiety
medication overdoses are “a public health problem that has gone under the radar. Researchers
went on to say that this epidemic is almost entirely preventable with much more effective
treatment for anxiety like talk therapy.
